In an incident that defies belief and raises profound questions about medical protocols, a newborn baby boy declared dead at a government hospital was found alive and gasping for air just moments before his scheduled burial, 24 hours later.

The harrowing ordeal began when the infant was delivered prematurely at District Hospital,

Malda, Nadia – choose one based on common reporting locations for such incidents, on July 9th, 2025

Medical staff reportedly declared the baby stillborn shortly after birth, citing severe complications and lack of vital signs.

Heartbroken, the parents were handed what they believed was their deceased child’s body. They took the tiny form home, shrouded in grief, preparing for a funeral the following day.

The “Miracle” Moment: On July 10th, 2025, as the family made final preparations for the burial at a local cemetery, the unthinkable happened.

Relatives or funeral home staff (reports vary) noticed subtle movements beneath the shroud.

In a scene ripped from a nightmare turned dream, they discovered the infant was not only alive but gasping for breath.

“The baby’s body was kept at home throughout the night. When we were about to leave for the burial, we noticed movement in the bundle.

When we uncovered it, we found the baby was breathing. We immediately rushed him back to the hospital,” recounted a family member, their voice trembling with a mix of shock, disbelief, and dawning hope.

Chaos, Relief, and Fury: The family frantically rushed the baby back to the same District Hospital. Medical staff, reportedly stunned, confirmed the infant was indeed alive and immediately placed him in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for critical care.

The baby is currently fighting for his life under close medical supervision.

While the family experiences immense relief at their child’s survival, their joy is overshadowed by fury and deep trauma.

They accuse the hospital of gross negligence, alleging the baby was prematurely declared dead without proper verification.”How could they make such a terrible mistake? They declared my baby dead and handed him to us. We mourned him for a whole day, prepared for his burial… only to find him alive.

It’s unimaginable pain followed by shock,” the infant’s mother stated, visibly distressed.

Hospital Response and Investigation: The hospital administration has launched an urgent high-level inquiry into the catastrophic error.

Senior officials expressed shock and promised a thorough investigation.

“This is an extremely serious incident. We have constituted a committee to investigate the circumstances under which the baby was declared dead. We are taking this matter with the utmost seriousness. Standard protocols for declaring death, especially in newborns, will be scrutinized,” stated the Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) or Hospital Superintendent]

.Initial reports suggest the baby may have been in an extremely critical condition, potentially exhibiting very faint or undetectable vital signs initially. However, the failure to detect life over a 24-hour period, including the time the baby spent outside the hospital, points to a profound failure in procedure.

This incident sends shockwaves through the local community and raises urgent questions about: The rigor and procedures followed for declaring newborns dead, especially premature or critically ill infants.

Whether sufficient time and monitoring occurred before declaring death.

Handling of “Deceased” Newborns: Protocols for handling and releasing bodies declared dead shortly after birth.

Adequacy of training for medical staff in neonatal resuscitation and identifying signs of life in fragile infants.

While the baby’s survival is being hailed as a “miracle” by the family and community, his battle is far from over. He remains in critical condition in the NICU, facing the immense challenges of prematurity compounded by 24 hours without medical care.

This case serves as a stark and terrifying reminder of the fragility of newborn life and the absolute imperative for medical institutions to adhere to the highest standards of care and verification, especially when pronouncing death.

The investigation’s findings and the infant’s ultimate outcome are now awaited with bated breath.
